Phan Thiet city belongs to Binh Thuan province, about 183 kilometers away from Northeastern Ho Chi Minh city and lies on the north-south communication axis of land route (National Road 1A). Phan Thiet is well-known as a beach tourists destination of Vietnam with white sand, crystal-clear blue sea water and poetry rows of coconut.

Not only does this land own fantastic landscapes, but it’s also a tourists attractions with diverse population (Chinese, Cham people…). In Phan Thiet Tourism, you not only visit and sightsee interesting places, but also taste delicious special foods made from fresh seafood.

Every month in year are perfect time for Phan Thiet Tourism. The weather at here is windier, sunnier and less stormy. From January to December, the weather is cooler than one of other month in year. April and May are two month have the highest temperature which can get 29 degrees Celsius. The perfect time for tourists coming to Phan Thiet are June and July.

Time: 5am, departs from Mien Dong Coach Station or De Tham street, District 1. Price: 8 USD – 10 USD/ticket.

Suggestion:

  • Kumho (Tel: 35 112 112, Address: Mien Dong Coach Station): drop off to Phan Thiet Coach Station. If you want to go to Mui Ne, you must take a taxi.
  • Phuong Trang (Tel: 38375570; Address: 274 – 276 De Tham street, District 1): drop off to Mui Ne, it’s convenient for tourists to go to Mui Ne.
  • Hoang Long (Office: Binh Thuan. Address: 18, Ward 2, Truong Chinh street – Xuan An – Phan Thiet. Tel: 0623 739 988)
  • Sinh Café (Tel: 38376 833- 38369 420. Address: 246-248 De Tham street, District 1): drop off to Mui Ne, it’s convenient for tourists to visit to Mui Ne.

By train:

  • Standard train: price 10 USD/ticket upwards, SPT means “departs in the morning”, PT4 means “departs in the evening at weekend”. Buy tickets at Sai Gon Train Station – 01 Nguyen Thong street, District 3.
  • High quality train – Golden Train: price 13 USD/ticket upwards, departs in the morning. Tel: 08.35261685 – 08.35262724.

Note:

  • To get to the center of Phan Thiet city you should choose Kumho and Phuong Trang because it drops tourists off to Phan Thiet Coach Station and have shuttle bus to take tourists to hotels, resorts in Phan Thiet.
  • To get to Mui Ne: you should choose Phuong Trang or Sinh Café because they’ll drop tourists off to resorts in Mui Ne.
  • To get to Mui Ke Ga: at Coop mart Phan Thiet supermarket, you should take the bus number 6 (every 30 minutes) from Phan Thiet to Mui Ke Ga and tell the drive to stop at your resort. When return, you ask the employee of your resort for helping you to catch the right bus to come back.

If you go by train, you should get off at Phan Thiet Train Station, not Muong Man Station which is further away from Phan Thiet. On train, they sell the bus tickets departing from the station to resorts in Mui Ne with price 1,3 USD/guest.

From Ha Noi:

Airplane is the most convenient transport for tourists from Ha Noi to Phan Thiet: Starting from Ha Noi to Ho Chi Minh city, then catch a coach or train to come to Phan Thiet. Besides that, you can fly from Ha Noi to Nha Trang, then go to Phan Thiet.

This school was established in 1907 by patriotic feudal intellectuals to support Duy Tan movement at Central Vietnam. Duc Thanh school marks the period when president Ho Chi Minh had taught at here before moving to Saigon. Nowadays, it’s still saving mementos almost intactly after nearly a century.

Van Thuy Tu Temple

On Ngu Ong (Whale) street, Duc Thang ward, Phan Thiet, there has a temple dedicated to God Nam Hai (literally translated whale). The whale skeleton which was saved at Van Thuy Tu Temple is 22 meters in length, weighs 65 tons and is recognized as the biggest skeleton of Vietnam and South east Asia. Every year, this temple hosts 5 days of the rituals on the lunar calendar as follow: 20/2 (Spring ritual), 20/4 (Ritual prays for fisherman), 20/6 (Ritual welcomes main season), 20/7, 20/8 (Ritual marks the end of season). In Mui Ne Tourism, you definitely have to discover Lau Ong Hoang because it relates to the poet Han Mac Tu. Lau Ong Hoang used to be a special place where Han Mac Tu and his lover – Mong Cam had been dating for a long time. Han Mac Tu has a lot of poems mentioning to this romantic place.

Poshanư Tower

It located on Ba Nai hill, Phu Hai ward, about 7 kilometers from the center of Phan Thiet to the southeast. Poshanư Tower is a group of relics of Ancient Cham Kingdom that still remain today. This tower has the architecture style of Hoa Lai art – one of ancient art style of Cham people. Although the tower is just medium and small, it clarifies the quintessential of architecture technique and decorative art of Cham people that makes it august and mysterious

Rang beach (Bãi Rạng)

Rang beach is the most beautiful beach of Phan Thiet city. It is 15 kilometers from the center of city to the southeast, under romantic coconut forest. In summertime, Rang beach is crowded with tourists coming here for not only swimming but also tasting delicious grilled blue flying fish.

Hon Rom (Hòn Rơm)

Hon Rom is a name of a small primitive mount at Long Son, Mui Ne ward, Phan Thiet. Coming here, tourists can immerse in crystal-clear blue sea water with steady wave. There’s no hidden rock. In every morning and afternoon, tourists have chance to enjoy sunrise and sunset; in the evening you can watch the moonrise or organize bonfire. Hon Ghenh (Hòn Ghềnh)

About 1 kilometer from Mui Ne, Hon Ghenh (or Hon Lao) is still primitive. To get to Hon Ghenh, you can go for a tour which pick tourists up at hotel or you can hire a boat of fisherman at the cost of 200000VND/boat/10 person round trip. After 10 minutes floating on the sea, you’ll come to the island. The first impression about this place is crystal-clear sea water. You can sea the beautiful corals from the bottom of the sea and the rocks were heaped up together. To sightsee Hon Lao’s landscape, you should choose afternoon because this is the time when you can see the sunset gradually going down and covering the sea. Morning is prefect time for amateur fisherman.

Mui Ne sand dunes (Đồi cát bay Mũi Né)

Near Hon Rom, there has a geological wonder which poets, artists and photographers are charmed with. That is Mui Ne sand dunes (belongs to 5th quarter, Mui Ne ward). Besides fantastic landscape, the color of sand is also an impression point which attracts a lot of tourists visiting (there are 18 different colors). If you go by motorcycle, you can park it at drink stalls that are opposite to sand dune’s area (remember to lock your motorcycle carefully and ask the stall’s owner for noticing it). Bau Trang – Bau Sen

Bau Trang – Bau Sen is 18 kilometers far away from Hon Rom. This is two natural lakes that lie between immense white sand dunes. Bau Trang has another name – Bau Ong. Coming here, tourists have chance to enjoy the lotus opening intermixing with white sand dunes in the summer. Bau Sen also has another name – Bau Ba. This place is a immense crystal clear lake surrounded by wonderful sand dunes.

Suoi Tien (Fairy Stream)

Suoi Tien is a destination named “Bong lai tien canh” (literally means paradise) by tourists. Suoi Tien is a little stream lying beside Hon Rom and running through a zone of dunes. One side of Suoi Tien is white and red stalactites intermixing together. The wind and the rain erode these stalactites to become weird appearances

Mui Ne fishing village

Mui Ne fishing village is 3 kilometers away from Mui Ne town to the north. At the entrance of the village, you can see hundreds of colorful fishing boats mooring on the port. Near the port, there is a small colorful market covered by peaceful green rows of coconuts. Walking along the shore full of shells especially the area of the port and the southern town, you’ll sea how fisherman classify fish.

  • Đảo Hòn Bà

Hon Ba (Hòn Bà) Island: is a small island, located 2km far from Lagi coast (Ham Tan ) to the East, 70km far from Phan Thiet City to the South-East. Hon Ba has the shape of a big turtle raising its head and lift its body up the water. On the island there is a statue of Ya Ana – a goddess of ancient Cham-pa kingdom.

  • Ke Ga (Kê Gà) Lighthouse:

From Phan Thiet City, tourists could take bus no.6 ( 5:30 – 18:00), go for 30km to reach the lighthouse (Ham Thuan Nam district, Binh Thuan province). If you go by motorbike, follow Highway 1 (on the way from Sai Gon to Phan Thiet), near Song Phan charging station (in Ham Minh commune, Ham Thuan Nam district) there is a three-way junction. Turn right and go ahead to Nhum stream then turn right to Ke Ga. The lighthouse stands majestically in the middle of pristine beach. To visit the lighthouse, tourists could contact resort reception to hire a boat, basket boat or boat of local people. But there isn’t life jacket on local boat. You could bring along or contact with your resort to hire a life jacket.

  • Ta Cu (Tà Cú) mountain pagoda

The mountain is located on Highway 1A, Thuan An (Thuận An) town (Ham Thuan Nam district), 30km far from Phan Thiet city. If you’re healthy and have a sense of adventure, you could conquer the moutain top by climbing 1000 stairs. The second way is  faster, you could reach the top in 15 minutes by cable car, costs 90,000VND/ 2-way ticket. There are 2 famous pagodas on the mountain: Linh Son Truong Tho (Linh Sơn Trường Thọ) và Long Doan (Long Đoàn) pagoda,  the most famous is the statue of Sakyamuni Buddha with the lying posture and 49 meters of length. This is the biggest reclining Buddha statue in South-East Asia. Besides, tourists could also explore inside ‘To’ (tổ) Cave.

  • Co Thach (Cổ Thạch) Beach and Rock field:

Stretching along a part of the coast,  there is a 7-color rock expanse located in Co Thach tourism zone. Stone rocks here have several kinds of sizes and shapes. This place was recognized by Vietbook (Vietnam Guinness Book Centre) as the most colorful rock field in Vietnam. The colorful rockfield  is an interesting destination attracting many tourists when coming to Phan Thiet.

  • Hang Pagoda:

Constructed in the XIX century, located in a cave on Co Thach (Cổ Thạch) mountain, up 64m high, belongs to Binh Thanh (Bình Thạnh) commune, Tuy Phong district. The Pagoda was built by Bao Tang (Bảo Tạng )- a Buddhist monk in the mid of 19th century. Tourists could visit the old pagoda and 7-colored stone rocks area.

  • Ganh Son (Gành Son)

To come to Ganh Son, turn right when out of Binh Thanh (Bình Thạnh) Village, go 5km along the beach and then ask for the way to Son (belongs to Chi Cong, Tuy Pong). In the early morning or evening, the sea here is quite calm and peaceful. From here, tourists could admire the daily life of local families in fishing village. The red of the stones, the blue of the ocean are combined together, making a magically beautiful scenery. This place is just like a gift of nature.

  • Cu Lao Cau (Cù lao Câu) island:

Belongs to Phuoc The (Phước Thể) commune, Tuy Phong district. It looks like a huge battleship, surrounded by thousands of stone rocks with variety colors and shapes. This is a deserted island, located 9km far from Phan Thiet coast, takes 1 hour and 30 minutes to go by boat from the mainland to the island. There are several kinds of  stone rocks with unique shapes laying in the green grass. This place is planned as marine protected area and is an attractive destination for marine ecotourism.

  • Phu Quy (Phú Quý) Island:

Located 100km far from Phan Thiet coast. On the island, there are quite big pagodas such as Linh Quang Pagoda , Cao Cat (Cao Cát) Pagoda.. recognized as cultural-historical sites.  If you have a chance to travel to smaller islands around Phu Quy Island such as Hon Tranh, Hon Den (Black Island), Hon Trung (Egg island), you must be surprised by the beauty of Phan Thiet sea.

What to eat in Phan Thiet?

  1. Rolling rice paper ( Bánh tráng cuốn dèo):

This dish and grilled shrimp paste rice paper (Bánh tráng mắm ruốc nướng) are sold a lot on the street by street vendors. The ingredients are quite simple: rice paper + shrimp paste + greaves + quail eggs. Everything is rolled up, making an interesting delicious dish.

  • Intersection of Tran Hung Dao (Trần Hưng Đạo) street and Thu Khoa Huan (Thủ Khoa Huân) street, near Hoa Nang (Hoa Nắng) café

  1. Thick noodle soup (Bánh Canh):

Banh Canh is a simple but nutritious food. You can eat Banh Canh with bread, there are many kinds of Banh Canh: Banh Canh cha ca (Banh Canh with grilled chopped fish), Banh Canh cha hap (chả hấp). The taste of this Phan Thiet dish is a bit sweet so it could be unfamiliar to some people. But it’s worth trying. Besides Banh Canh, you could also try Banh mì xiu mai (Vietnamese bread with meat ball).

  1. Seafood Salad (Gỏi Hản sản)

This is the dish you must try when coming to Phan Thiet. It’s made from fresh fishes such as sillago, silverside fish, deep hering, served with raw vegetables, noodles and special sauce.

  1. Phan Thiet Quang Noodle (Mì Quảng)

This is a typical speciality of Phan Thiet, you should try once to find out the difference between Quang noodle in Quang region and Phan Thiet.

Location: -129 Tran Phu (Trần Phú) street. Opened both in the morning and evening

  • A restaurant near Phan Boi Chau (Phan Bội Châu) school. From Le Hong Phong street, pass Phan Boi Chau school for 200m, the restaurant is on your left. It’s only opened in the morning.

  1. Phan Thiet ‘Căn’ Cake (Bánh căn):

It’s not difficult to find an eatery selling this cake on the street in Phan Thiet. The dish is usually sold in the evening at affordable price.

Location: – From Le Hong Phong (Lê Hồng Phong) Bridge toward Phan Thiet market, go straight ahead, there is a food stall selling in the evening, in front of an eyeglasses store named “Eden”

  1. “Rế” Cake

This is a speciality cake in Phan Thiet. It has attractive flavor and color, and it can last a long time. You could buy this in Phan Thiet Market or in speciality stores along Ca Ty Riverside.

  1. Deep-fried fish (Cá lồi xối mỡ):

The dish is as good as deep-herring fish salad, it would  be such regretful if you don’t have a chance to enjoy this dish when travelling in Phan Thiet

Deep-fried fish

  1. Quai Vac Cake (Bánh Quai Vạc): is a cheap but tasty food. It’s sold by many street hawkers at Doi Duong (Đồi Dương) Beach, tourists could also enjoy it at food court inside Phan Thiet Market.
  2. ‘Giac’ sea nail salad (Gỏi ốc giác): This food could takes with beer, it’s a favorite snack of local students.

Location: the area around Health Department, near Phan Thiet gas station.

Time: from about 3PM to 7PM. They sell several types of sea snails here.

  1. ct (Bún bò Phan Thiết): When it comes to Bun bo, many think about Bun Bo in Hue (Huế). But do you know Phan Thiet has its own special Bun bo, too? This food here has its outstanding flavor and especially thinner noodles than Bun bo in Sai Gon.

Coming to Phant Thiet, you could hang out with your friends late at night and get hungry. At that time, nothing is better than a delicious hot bowl of Pho (Phở). Lac Ha Pho is an old established restaurant in Phan Thiet, located on front line of Tran Hung Dao (Trần Hưng Đạo) street. It’s well-known to many locals and tourists.

  1. ‘Tha’ Hot Pot (Lẩu Thả):

To many tourists in Mui Ne, this food is the most favorite speciality. This Phan Thiet special fish hot pot is made from sillago, silverside fish, especially deep hering – one of the speciality fish of Phan Thiet – Binh Thuan area

‘Tha’ Hot pot is a special dish that through it, tourists could explore not only the flavors but the profound philosophy meaning of Vietnam cuisine, based on 5 elements inherited from ancient Buddhism: water, fire, wood, metal, and earth.

  1. Grilled ‘Dong’ (Dông nướng)

Dong is a speciality of sand dunes area. For those Phan Thiet people living far from their hometown, this is an unforgetable dish in their mind.  However, nowadays we have this dish in many restaurants, but nowhere better than Phan Thiet. The flavors and the cooking methods here are more special and different than other places.

  1. ‘Bo hom’ Fish (Cá bò hòm):

This fish belongs to White Box fish genus, it has white meat which is quite chewy like chicken and it doesn’t smell like fish. It’s most delicious to eat with rice paper. The dish is sold in many eateries on Pham Van Dong street (along Ca Ty riverside), or in restaurants in Mui Ne.

  1. Half-dried squid:

Besides Ranina Crab (Cua Huỳnh đế), lobster… there is another speciality in Phan Thiet everyone wants to enjoy is Phan Thiet one-sun dried Squid.

The broad squid is dried under the sun in just one day, then it’ll be grilled on charcoal fire. After that, it’ll turn to yellow and become tasty and fragrant. This dish would be much more delicious when using with Phan Thiet fish sauce and chili peper.
